Personal Goal Achieved

Today was a GREAT day for me. A co-worker and I have been training for a few months to run in the Army 10 Mile race coming up in October. I have tried to get into running in the past, but would hit a wall in my training. This past December, I had my knee 'scoped and went through all of the physical therapy required and started feeling GREAT. We were talking at work one day about doing this race, so we just decided to do it. We started training, paid our fees (which we were not committed), and started training. We took it slow and started building up. A couple of weeks ago, we ran to work from my house (7.5 miles) which was our longest yet.

Now, duty calls, and we may be on travel on the weekend of the race, so we decided that we needed to prove to ourselves that we could do 10 miles. TODAY WAS THE DAY. We told our supervisor what we were doing, and we would be late. We ran the loop around the base (10 miles) in 1hr 37min. That is about 9:45min/mile. I would like to have had a faster pace, but I am satisfied with the finish. I am sore, but feel good knowing that I can do it. Brian has been a HUGE motivator for me. We are both pretty hard-headed and will not quit unless the other one does.

I have had this crazy race idea in my head for quite a while, but have never been able to dig deep enough to do it. Now that we know we can physically do it, we are going to work on improving our pace. We may not be able to run in October, but we will be able to compete in shorter races locally.

I have even lost enough weight in my training, that I don't have any pants that fit anymore. My running has also motivated Mel into doing a little herself. She is starting out light, but seems to be improving each time she goes out. Hopefully, we can run a 5k together in the Spring.

I have put a Google map of the run below.

Congrats! I have to say that Mel inspired me when she was out here. Who knows, I might even start running one day. :)
